When you have straightened the threads, make sure they all have even tension, so there are no threads hanging looser than the others. Then tie a knot in this end as well. You can use a piece of thread to make a loop also in this end, so you can secure the setup to some object while you are not working on it.
The thread that will go from side to side between the lengthwise threads is called a weft. One way of handling it is to cut from a playing card a piece like in the following picture and wrap the weft around it. Make the long sides of the piece straight, so the piece can also be used for pressing the weft in place.
